Hair Relaxers & Keratin Hair Straightening For All Hair Types

At Last Tangle, we provide several types of hair relaxer and hair straightening treatments to alter the basic structure of naturally wavy or curly hair so that you can enjoy straight -or less curly/frizzy - hair. Our treatments are not the same as Japanese hair straightening (which is also known as thermal reconditioning, a method of permanently straightening human hair). With Japanese hair straightening, chemicals are applied, the hair is ironed piece by piece, and then rinsed and blow dried. The process takes 2-8 hours, depending on the length, thickness and condition of one's hair and typically costs around $1,000 - $1,500 every 4-6 months. Since many people are not good candidates for Japanese hair straightening (due to cost, hair type, texture, condition, and prior chemical use), we prefer hair relaxers and keratin hair straightening and consider these to be better alternatives.

Hair Relaxers

FAQs:

Can all hair lengths and types be relaxed?

Hair relaxers can be used on any length of hair and can also be used on a “spot” basis to deal with stubborn cowlicks, whorls, or uneven growth patterns. They can also be used on just the roots, just the ends or throughout the entire head of hair. They can be used on hair extensions (if the hair is 100% human and not synthetic).

These relaxers work on all type of hair and are done on men and women. They also work on combo hair – e.g. hair that is part curly, part wavy and part straight. Depending upon how long the relaxer is allowed to process, the results can range from straight to subtle waves with soft bend. Curls and natural texture always come back when the roots grow back.

Do you use the same relaxers on all hair types?

No – different types of relaxers are used, depending upon hair type and chemical status.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When will my curls return?

The relaxers will permanently block the return of your curls, except for root regrowth.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Should I deep condition my hair?

Deep conditioning treatments are recommended on a weekly basis to build back strength and prevent hair from feeling/looking too dry. This can be done at our salon or at home (using the right products).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once the hair is relaxed, is there no turning back?

No – chemically relaxed hair can be altered to add back curls and waves (or straightened even more through hot irons and rollers).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the typical cost for this?

The average cost is approximately $100 and depends on hair length.

Keratin Hair Straightening and Frizz Removal

At Last Tangle, we only use top-of-the-line keratin hair straightening/frizz removal products that are designed to revitalize and rejuvenate hair, eliminating frizz and curl. The active ingredient is keratin, a protein that is sealed onto the hair using a flat iron. This restores and restructures hair by infusing the keratin deep into the damaged cuticle. This smoothes out the roughness of the cuticle while sealing in moisture – this gives the hair a shiny, glossy finish. The process takes 2-4 hours (depending upon the length and texture of the hair) and costs $150/hour. It typically lasts 3-4 months. Keratin hair straightening isn’t the same as a hair relaxer or Japanese thermal reconditioning – it’s more like applying a protective coating to the hair and can be used on color or chemically-treated hair. It actually seals in the hair color. It can also be used on African American hair without damaging it.

FAQs:

How long does this treatment usually take?

You should expect to be in the salon for a 2-3 hour time period.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the hair like after the treatment?

Your hair will be more manageable and take much less time to style. It will be noticeably softer and straighter, with added life and shine as well as a longer look.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can hair be colored before treatment?

Yes – a great time to have the straightening treatment done is directly after coloring or chemically treating the hair. The color will be sealed in, leaving the hair vibrant and extending the life of the color. However, you must wait 2 weeks to color your hair after the treatment.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can the treatment be done on chemically treated hair?

Yes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How many days after the treatment can hair get wet or washed?

You must wait 3-4 days before swimming or washing your hair.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can the hair be pulled back or clipped up during the 3-4 day waiting period?

No – the hair should not have any impressions made by using bands or clips..
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How often can the treatment be done?

As often as every 4-6 weeks.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is the re-application of the treatment done on the entire head or just on the new growth?

The re-application should be done on the entire head, since the build up of keratin will improve - not harm - the hair.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long will the treatment last?

The treatment can last up to 3 months, depending on hair type and texture, and provided the client follows all after-care instructions.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Should the hair be cut before or after the treatment?

We recommend that hair be cut after the treatment, since it will have a smoother texture and will lie differently on the head.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can the treatment be done on pregnant or nursing women?

No – this is not advisable.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can the treatment be done on children?

Yes – and with great results!
