Hair Color Services

Single Process and Semi-Permanent/Demi-Permanent Color

Single process color involves the application of permanent, semi-permanent or demi-permanent color to the entire head to create a new base color. The difference between each of these types of color is how much of a change you’re looking for and the length of time you want the color to last.

If you want a more dramatic change (2 or more shades lighter or darker) than your natural hair color, then permanent color is the way to go. Only permanent color will cover gray hair and won’t wash out. Your roots will need to be re-touched about every 4-6 weeks.

If you’re looking to subtly deepen your natural hair color or add a layer of color (such as a red tone to brown hair) a semi (or demi) permanent color is your best option. These will darken – not lighten – hair because of smaller amounts of ammonia and peroxide. They are also more gentle on the hair than permanent color.

Semi-permanent color washes out over a period of time (6-12 shampoos, depending upon the formula) so works well if temporary color is what you’re looking for. It can subtly deepen your natural hair color or add a layer of color (such as a red tone on brown hair). It has the additional benefit of not showing noticeable roots.

Demi-permanent color will provide you with longer-lasting color than semi-permanent color. It washes out after 12-26 washes and can deepen and intensify your natural color.

Double Process Color

A high-lift color can lift up to four levels of natural color and simultaneously will deposit color. Double process color has a higher ammonia content to enable us to exceed four levels of color lift.

Going lighter in color takes more than a single process permanent color can accomplish if you’re looking to be a golden or platinum blonde. We apply a color lightener to remove natural color from the hair and then apply a toner for color.

Partial and Full Highlights

Highlights are great for mimicking the beautiful light strands that are associated with “sun kissed” hair. When applied to dirty blonde or mousy brown hair, highlights transform these colors into shades that are rich, beautiful and alluring.

We use partial highlights to draw attention to certain features, accentuate a style, or create a new look for a simple cut.

With full highlights, we evenly highlight your entire head to break up color that may be too flat or one-dimensional. We often apply highlights in two or more different shades – either with shades lighter than the base color (and one shade lighter than the other) or with one shade being lighter and one darker than the base color. The latter style of highlighting is called “dimensional coloring” and is used to produce a more natural and pleasing look.

Lowlights are similar to highlights. Instead of removing color to create lighter strands that highlight the hair, we use color to create darker strands that add warmth to the hair. Lowlights are a great option for many with salt and pepper gray hair and want to put a bit more “pepper” back into the hair.

To maintain a full head of highlights or lowlights, crown re-growth should be re-touched in one or two 4-6 week interval visits, with a return for a full head. Another option is to have the full head followed by a half-head about 3 months later and then a full head 3 months after that.

Henna

Henna is a natural plant, so it offers the benefit of both conditioning and coloring your hair in a safe and natural way. This is often a great option for those who are pregnant, nursing, allergic to traditional chemical color products, or have health problems and are concerned about chemical exposure.

As a conditioner, henna strengthens the hair. It has anti-fungal properties, reduces the occurrence of dandruff, conditions the scalp, slightly loosens curls, and helps to detangle and make hair more manageable. It provides a natural and healthy sheen and shine to hair. Neutral Henna contains no color and is a great way to condition damaged or extremely dry hair.

As a natural source of color, henna provides a beautiful way to achieve red and reddish highlights on dark hair. It does not color hair like synthetic dyes, but rather coats the hair shaft with a transparent red coloring. As applications of henna are repeated, the color deepens. Henna does not and cannot lighten hair.

On black and dark brown hair, henna will become dark auburn to burgundy/black (with red highlights that are noticeable in sunlight). Henna on blonde hair can be used as a conditioner and enhance the blonde or it can shift the blonde color to varying shades of red (from strawberry to auburn). Henna on red hair will make the hair a deeper and richer red. Depending on the shade of brown hair, henna can produce a natural red/auburn/dark auburn hue. On white or grey hair, henna can add a strawberry or auburn tone.

Balayage

Balayage is French, meaning “to sweep or paint” and is a color process that is designed to provide a very natural, sun-kissed effect with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines. It works on both light and dark hair, with “bronde” being a combination of brown and blonde tones (perfect for those with darker hair who want to try a lighter color). It works on all hair lengths, too, except very short-cropped hair. The highlighting can also be stronger/bolder, depending upon your individual preference.

Balayage is applied on the surface of the hair through a skilled, freehand technique – no foil or meche are used, so there is less uniformity in color. The goal is to match your skin tone in order to enhance and light up your features. Since there are no obvious regrowth lines, it lasts longer between appointments. To protect the color, we recommend use of a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner.

Ombre

Ombre also derives from the French word “shadow”. It is applied through a balayage technique in which color is darker at the roots through the mid-shaft of the hair, gradually getting lighter from the mid-shaft to the ends. It is a form of color blocking, with no dark pieces left on the bottom in order to help keep it natural – just a nice transition between the colors.

Hair Extensions

Last Tangle in Washington Salon has been recognized by several publications as one of the best salons for hair extensions in DC.

Hair extensions are ideal for adding volume, texture, length, highlights and dynamic color gently to your own hair. Many of our extension clients have fine or thinning hair and have found our extensions to be the solution that they’ve been seeking after many years of frustration managing their own hair. The extensions that we use are gentle on the hair and scalp, thin, comfortable, and virtually undetectable within your own hair.

Last Tangle in Washington Salon has been providing hair extensions for several years. We are constantly reviewing new product lines and are certified in all of the lines that we use. Our current favorite is Hotheads Hair Extensions, a revolutionary product that was created by European and US designers to provide the most innovative human hair extensions. It has the finest human hair that requires no heating elements, clamps, fusing, glues or machinery to damage one’s own hair. Unlike any other method available today, our clients receive the simplest, fastest and most extraordinary human hair extensions and thinning hair solutions available worldwide. These extensions are also reusable and more affordable than other products on the market.

Many of our hair extension clients come to us after having had extensions done in other salons and are amazed at the difference in our extension products and services in terms of comfort, ease of maintenance, speed of application, and lack of damage to their own hair.

For our African American clients, we offer custom hair weaves as well as skillfully tailored, sew-in hair extensions. Each of our finely braided bases for our sew-ins are designed for your hair conditioning needs, thinning areas, minimal hairline tension, natural head form and proper degree of smoothness.

Our extensions are 100% remy human hair, which provides the most natural appearance and is considered the finest choice for extensions, hairpieces and wigs. It is also referred to as cuticle hair, virgin hair and raw hair. For clients who are interested in fantasy (wild) color hair, we have a blend of synthetic and human hair. Since bright colors typically have drastic fading within 1-2 washings, the blend that we use allows the colors to remain vibrant and can be curled and blown dry.

Since we use a revolutionary line, we can provide this service in approximately 1-2 hours, depending upon the amount and length of hair desired. We apply the hair and then cut and style it for you.

Typically 8-10 weeks and they are reusable (up to 3 times), which results in substantial savings on the cost of the hair itself.

We prefer to not add chemical color to the hair extensions themselves. There are 20 colors that we can blend to create up to 400 different shades.

Yes – it is just not recommended that you sit under a dryer/heat source or that you apply heat too close to where the extensions have been applied.

We highly recommend that you use the products that have been developed by the manufacturer but if you prefer your own products, this is fine as long as these products do not contain alcohol, oil or ethanol.

Your roots should be done 24-48 hours prior to extensions being applied. In-between extension services, we can retouch your roots when there is ample hair growth.

Keratin Smoothing Treatments

Since all hair straightening and smoothing products are not alike and there is a great deal of misinformation and controversy, Last Tangle in Washington has been very careful in researching and using products that have been recognized in our industry to be safe and effective, with little to no formaldehyde, methylene glycol or equivalent compounds.

We are constantly monitoring the latest products and their safety information through various organizations, such as the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to review and assess the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics in an open, unbiased and expert manner and publishes the results in peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Last Tangle in Washington’s use of these keratin smoothing treatment products can and will change according to the latest safety reports and our continual evaluation of these products’ performance. We monitor these products closely to ensure the safety of our clients and stylists. At the present time, we use the following lines of products due to their smoothing / straightening performance as well as their safety:

  • Anevolve
  • GK Hair
  • Chi Enviro American Smoothing Treatment
  • Brazilian Blowout
  • Keratin Express Blowout

Depending upon your hair type and individual preferences, we will discuss the various different products that we use, tailoring the best one for you.
If you long for silky straight hair but do not have the time or budget for a regular keratin smoothing treatment, try a Keratin Express Blowout. In about an hour, you can have the same beautiful smooth hair as you would with a traditional keratin smoothing treatment (which typically takes 2-3 hours). During your treatment, keratin will be sealed into your hair to lock out frizz and reduce the amount of curl in your hair. The Keratin Express Blowout will give your hair a softer, smoother texture for up to 6 weeks and you can wash your hair in just 8 hours after leaving the salon. It is great directly after a color treatment, since it also seals the color and protects it from fading.

We encourage you to discuss all Keratin Smoothing Treatments with our staff.

Additional Hair Care Services

Permanents and Body Waves

Permanent waves have come a long way over the years and can give you exactly the kind of wave you want. You can just add body to fine, limp hair or get loose, sexy waves. You can even have the corkscrew curls that many straight-haired girls have always wanted.

The key difference between a permanent and body wave is the size of the tools used in wrapping the hair. We use different strengths of permanent wave formulas and different size rods to achieve the desired effect. The key advantage of a body wave (especially in long hair) isn’t so much to get curls but to improve the “body” of the hair, allowing it to better hold various styles.

Relaxers

Hair relaxers straighten hair permanently through the use of various chemicals to thin out hair that is very thick or to make it more manageable. Chemical relaxers soften the hair, changing its natural structure to a straighter form. Though hair relaxers are a permanent type of hair treatment, they do require touch-ups on a regular basis. The new hair growth is naturally curly or coarser so it is important to apply relaxer to the new growth to make sure that it matches the already chemically-relaxed hair. Typically, this is done every 6-8 weeks.

Wrap & Curl

For those with African American hair who don’t want to wear it in its natural state, our wrap and curl services will wet set, blow dry and thermally curl/iron your hair to achieve a smooth, straight look.

Conditioning Treatments

It’s easy for hair to become dry and damaged from daily exposure to sun, heat, chemicals and the numerous other regimens that we subject hair to on a daily basis. Our deep conditioning treatments are the perfect remedy to restore hair to its proper health and vitality and impart the shine that you need and want. Sit and relax for 10-15 minutes while your hair gets the replenishing nourishment it so desperately needs. With regular treatments, deep conditioning can make a remarkable difference on over-processed or frizz-prone hair.
